South Texas Hunting Cars
There is so much land to cover when hunting
in our area, most of it is done from a hunting car. If you had to
walk the distance that is required to find the 20 coveys per day that we
consider a standard day, you would be one tired hunter.
Hop on a hunting car for a hunt and let's see what one
looks like.
The South Texas hunting car is a unique
vehicle and it comes in all shapes and sizes. Most of the hunting
cars are actually four wheel drive pick up trucks with the bed removed and
a special hunting bed installed. This will contain high seats for
the hunters to watch the dogs run, a cooler for the drinks, a water jug
for the hunters, dog cages for carrying several dogs, a water reservoir
for the dogs, spare tires, tools, a wet bar (when the gun powder is put
away). In short, the truck will carry everything that is needed for
man or dog to stay in the field for a day of hunting.
I built my first hunting car in 1978 using
a 1968 VW bus body. A friend called it the quailmobile and the name
stuck. I am in the process of building my third quailmobile and it
is being built using a 1970 VW bus body.
